BAY JAMMER 2008

A VENTURING EVENT OF THE BAY-LAKES COUNCIL, BSA

"America’s Oldest Scouting Event" July 18h, 19th, and 20th Great Lakes Memorial Marina Park Menominee, Michigan

For the past sixty consecutive years, the Bay-Lakes Council, BSA and its Venturing Program have sponsored an event known nation-wide as Bay Jammer on the shores of Green Bay in historic downtown Menominee, Michigan. This year will be no different as the tradition continues the weekend of July 18, 19, and 20, 2008. This year Bay Jammer will celebrate its 60th anniversary, so plans are being made to make the celebration bigger and better than ever before.

For those of you unfamiliar with Bay Jammer, the event began with an idea back in the cold winter of 1948. The original idea was to bring together Sea Scouts, Explorers, Boy Scouts, and Senior Girl Scouts for a weekend of competition, comraderie, and fun on the shores of Green Bay in Menominee. At the time this event was conceived, the idea was by far a bold one, but the forefathers pushed forward and created what is today considered the oldest Scouting event of its kind in America.

Today Bay Jammer is clearly the largest event of the Bay-Lakes Council’s Venturing program. The event offers Scouts an opportunity to show off their talents in a wide-variety of ways, including competing in various competitions over a period of three days. The weekend festival will begin on Friday, July 18th with a talent competition known as "LipJam". This event will be followed by various other events on Saturday, July 19th such as canoe races, log sawing, first aid, compass relay, sand sculpting, and more. The weekend concludes on Sunday, July 20th with events such as volleyball, tug-of-war, and a triathlon.

Each summer units travel from all over the Midwest to attend Bay Jammer. In 2007, over 380 youth and adults made the trip to Menominee for this historic event. In the past, some units have traveled from as far away as Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan to participate. This year we are really hoping that more units from within the Bay-Lakes Council will consider attending. Units eligible to compete include Venture Crews, Explorer Posts, Boy Scout Troops, Sea Scout Ships, Mariner Ships, and Senior Girl Scout Troops. Youth must be at least age 14 to participate.

For those units concerned about accommodations for the weekend, the Bay Jammer staff does an excellent job finding affordable places for units to stay. Various churches and schools in the Menominee area allow Bay Jammer participants to stay at their facilities for a minimal fee. Menominee also has a variety of hotels to choose from; however, the committee does not arrange lodging at these facilities.

On behalf of all of the members of the Bay Jammer Executive Committee, we hope that you will consider attending with your unit this coming summer.
